When to use a Router?
Nung bumamaba ang rates ng DSL dito sa Pilipinas, madami na sa atin ang nakaka-afford makakuha ng sarili nilang internet connection as offered by different Internet Service Providers (ISP) like SMART Bro, Globe Broadband and PLDT MyDSL. But basically, when you subscribe to these providers isang connection lang ibibigay nila for you to use. Paano kung meron ka pang isa (1) o mahigit pang computers na gusto mo na maka-connect using the same Internet Line?
Maraming paraan para padamihin ang access sa internet using a single internet line. You can either use a switch/hub to connect the DSL modem or you can use a router instead. This time will talk about routers.
A router as defined is a networking device whose software and hardware are usually tailored to the tasks of routing and forwarding information. Mas maayos ang magiging network traffic as compared sa switch or hub. Meron din siyang security features like a firewall and page blocker.
SOHO (small office home office) Routers are easy to configure. Basically, meron itong wizard for instant configuration. Just plug in the DSL modem to the WAN port of the router and then plug in your PC using one of the UTP cables to the Router's LAN Port. Refer nyo lang sa manual for the right instructions, procedures and steps to configure your device.
As of now you can buy different kinds of routers. A basic router has only 1 WAN Port (ISP) and 4 LAN ports (for the PCs) which is ideal for home users and small offices. Meron din nabibili na DUAL WAN Routers para maka-accommodate ng dalawang (2) ISP of either the same or different companies. DUAL WAN Routers can be used as a FAILSAFE network device in case mag-down ang isang ISP.
So if you want to have a controlled internet connection and want to distribute the connection to a few more PCs, better get a router to do the job. If you have a hard time installing one, just look for a trusted technician to the job. You can call me actually if possible
